The Underrated Gem: Inner Mongolia Museum

The Inner Mongolia Museum, an often overlooked yet highly esteemed institution, stands as the sole national first-level museum in the entire Inner Mongolia region, underscoring its significance in the cultural landscape. Its relative obscurity, however, ensures a serene and intimate visitor experience, making it an easily accessible gem. ❗❗❗

Tips for Your Visit:

  • It is recommended to explore the museum from top to bottom, as the highlights are primarily located in the F and F~ levels. The exhibits in the “Dawn of Civilization” hall (Figures 2-4) and the “Borderland Chronicles” hall (Figures 6-10) offer a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich history. The “Great Liao and Khitan” hall (Figures 12-14) houses several prized treasures, while the “Songs of the Northern Frontier” and “Convergence and Fusion” halls showcase unique patterns, designs, and lifestyles unseen in Central China. Notably, Figure 17 is an identical replica of a piece I had seen at the Liaoning Provincial Museum, adding an intriguing layer of interconnectedness.
  • The cultural and creative products store located on the F level offers a diverse range of items, albeit with higher price tags. You can also get stamps for your souvenirs. As a reference, my two fridge magnets (shown in the last image) cost a total of 80r.
  • The F level also features a casual dining area and a café, offering cultural-themed snow cream and coffee. Hot water is available on each floor for your convenience.
  • For families with young children, the -F-F levels house dinosaur skeletons and spacecraft exhibitions, providing an engaging and educational experience. Adults who are pressed for time may opt to skip these areas.

Visiting Information:

The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Entry stops at 4:00 pm. A thorough visit may take up to half a day, so please plan your time accordingly. 🚍 Access is convenient via Metro Line 1, with a station directly adjacent to the museum. Advance bookings can be made through the official channels, and it is recommended to make reservations one day prior to your visit.
