My recent visit to Shexian has been nothing short of magnificent, especially the “Huizhou Ancient City” located in the Huicheng Town. This understated yet captivating locale is a free 5A-rated scenic spot, one of the four best-preserved ancient cities in China.
Huizhou Ancient City, a testament to thousands of years of history, is also the birthplace of “Hui Studies,” one of the three major local academic schools in China. As the Spring Festival approaches, if you happen to be in Shexian, do not miss out on this remarkable destination.

- Doushan Street, exuding the ancient charm of the Ming and Qing dynasties, allows you to immerse in the atmosphere of this ancient city as you walk on its stone steps.
- Xu Guo Stone Archway, also known as the University Scholar Archway, stands at the entrance of the ancient city. This typical Ming-era stone archway is a must-see.
- Huizhou Prefectural Yamen, a key cultural relic under state protection, is an ideal destination for history buffs.
- If you have extra time, Fish Beam Dam is worth a visit. With a history spanning over 1000 years, it is not only a short distance from the ancient city but also the most renowned water conservancy project in ancient Huizhou, earning it the moniker of “the First Dujiangyan of Jiangnan.” The white-walled and black-tiled Hui-style buildings standing by the riverbank form a delightful contrast with their reflections.
