Travel Tips in Tianjin: Dos and Don’ts

🚗 Transportation: It’s advisable to use taxi-hailing apps when traveling in Tianjin. Upon exiting areas with Italian-style architecture, numerous taxis and private cars may approach you, offering rides. Avoid getting into these vehicles! Once, we attempted to go to the Ceramic House, but the driver repeatedly hesitated, asking if we preferred to stop at a Dog Not Leave Buns or Big Hemp Flower stand. After declining, he tried to persuade us to visit a wax museum, which made us suspicious and prompted us to record the incident. Ultimately, we firmly refused, and the driver impatiently ushered us out of the car. Additionally, we learned that some drivers earn significant profits by recommending tourists to purchase local snacks, such as麻花, for inflated prices.

🚌 Night Views: The double-decker buses for night views can be quite chilly, especially during the evenings. The strong winds can be quite uncomfortable and may not provide the best conditions for capturing beautiful portraits. Unless you’re particularly keen on capturing the night scenery, it’s advisable to visit when the weather is warmer.

📍 Attractions: If you’re not an early riser, I would recommend skipping the Dongjiang Qinhai Park. We visited expecting to capture stunning images of seagulls and the sunrise, but due to our late arrival around 11 am, the water was dirty, the seagull feeding time had passed, and the wind along the seashore was extremely strong, making it difficult to capture satisfactory photos.

🍚 Dining: If you’re keen on trying authentic Tianjin cuisine, ensure you visit restaurants during mealtimes. Many local restaurants in Tianjin do not operate in the afternoons. On our visit, we struggled to find an open restaurant from 14:40 to 15:30, ultimately resorting to fast food. However, if your schedule is tight, we were recommended by a taxi driver to visit Lao Gu Sha Guo Zong Dian, which operates 24 hours.

💼 Preparations: It’s absolutely essential to bring a power bank! While exploring Tianjin, whether it’s through city walks or visits to the Ocean Museum in the Binhai area, there are no shared power banks available. During our visit to the Ocean Museum, we frantically searched for a power bank, but to no avail. In the end, we had to make our way back to the Binhai Station with phones barely charged, constantly worried about running out of battery.

Despite these pitfalls, Tianjin offers a captivating experience with its laid-back atmosphere, humor, and unique charm. Whether it’s experiencing comic performances, exploring transportation options, enjoying local baths, or tasting delicious cuisine, Tianjin has plenty to offer.
