Honest Talk for Sisters Planning a May Visit to Xinjiang

To my sisters intending to visit Xinjiang during the May holiday, let me share some honest truths. While the words may not be pleasant to hear, it’s undeniable that this is the current reality of traveling in Xinjiang during this time. I hope the following tips will be helpful to you.

Firstly, the most verdant grassland in Xinjiang during May is Qiaxi. Secondly, Xinjiang is not suitable for budget travel. With one-sixth of the country’s territory, it’s vast and sparsely populated. Especially during the small peak of the May holiday, even without considering travel expenses, a budget of at least 4000 yuan is recommended, including food, accommodation, transportation, and entertainment.

Thirdly, the weather in May can change rapidly, so it’s advisable to bring a windbreaker or thicker clothing for your trip. Fourthly, May is not the peak season for tourism in Xinjiang, so you can expect fewer crowds and no need to wait in long lines at scenic spots.

Fifthly, there is a two-hour time difference between Xinjiang and the mainland, which may take some getting used to for first-time visitors. Sixthly, there is still a possibility of snowfall in Nalati in May. Seventhly, beware of low-cost, all-inclusive tour groups promoted on social media platforms as they often turn out to be disappointing.

Based on my personal experience, I recommend the following itinerary for a visit to Yili during May: Day 1: Yining → Sayram Lake → Guozigou Bridge → Liuxing Street → Yining; Day 2: Yining → Kuldering → Bagua City → Tekes; Day 3: Tekes → Liji Street → Qiongkushitai Ancient Village → Qiongkushitai; Day 4: Qiongkushitai → Qiaxi Grassland → Xinyuan; Day 5: Xinyuan → Nalati Aerial Grassland + Valley Grassland → Yining City.

Lastly, I strongly advise against joining cheap tour groups, whether in Xinjiang or anywhere else in the country. Remember that you get what you pay for. I once fell for the cheap price of a tour to Xiamen, but it turned out to be mostly shopping trips, leaving me exhausted and not saving any money. If you truly want to travel on a budget, consider self-driving and doing your own research. For those seeking convenience and safety, choose a reputable local tour group.
