Embarking on a winter break adventure in Beijing with our little ones, we aimed to enjoy the city’s attractions, enjoy convenient accommodation, and dine without the hassle of long queues. This comprehensive guide is a must-have for anyone planning a similar trip, filled with invaluable tips and insights.
When it comes to exploring, we recommend allocating at least four days to fully immerse yourself in the city’s cultural riches. Highlights include the China Science and Technology Museum, the National Museum of China, the Summer Palace, and the Forbidden City, all essential destinations for a family trip.
On the first day, we visited the China Science and Technology Museum. It’s crucial to book tickets seven days prior through the official channels. Apart from the main exhibition hall, reservations for the Science Children’s Playground and Special Effects Cinema are also necessary. This venue deserves a whole day of exploration, and afterward, you can enjoy a meal at the nearby Xiaodiao Litang restaurant, while also catching glimpses of the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube.
The second day was dedicated to the Forbidden City. Advance bookings are required seven days prior, with tickets available at 20:00. Once you’ve explored its grandeur, a stroll across the street will lead you to Jingshan Park, offering panoramic views of the Forbidden City.
On the third day, we ventured to the National Museum of China. Booking is essential seven days in advance, with tickets available at 17:00 through the official app. Upon exiting, Tiananmen Square awaits, and a short five-minute walk brings you to Dashilan for shopping and dining. For dinner, we recommend securing a table at Siji Minfu, where you can take a number and continue exploring while waiting.
The fourth day was devoted to the Summer Palace. We recommend entering through the New Palace Gate and exiting through the North Palace Gate, opting for a reverse route to avoid the crowds.
As for accommodation, we chose the Hanting Hotel in Niu Street, renowned for its proximity to a food street. Below the hotel, you’ll find Jingtai Maji Lamb Kebabs and Gongting Xiangsu Beef Pancakes, while Hongji Baozi and various other culinary delights await just a stone’s throw away. Furthermore, Niu Street Metro Station is a mere five-minute walk, ensuring convenient access to the city’s attractions.
