Embarking on a journey to ring in the new year, I finally fulfilled my long-held desire to take my parents to Beijing last week. The trip was deliberately paced, offering ample time for relaxation and exploration, and I hope it serves as a useful reference for those planning their own adventures in the city.
Transportation: Utilizing the convenient “Yitongxing” app, navigating Beijing’s extensive subway network was a breeze.
Attractions: Booking at least a week ahead is highly recommended. Typically, reservations can be made by simply searching for the desired attraction on various platforms.
Accommodation: I opted for a hotel located just outside of Guangqumen, offering breakfast and situated within a stone’s throw of the subway station. This location was particularly suitable for our early starts, as it allowed us to conveniently access the city’s various attractions.
Here’s a breakdown of our five-day, four-night itinerary (detailed images included):
- Day 1: Flew from Guangzhou to Beijing, visited the South Gate of the Temple of Heaven, and enjoyed a delicious hotpot meal at the Temple of Heaven branch.
- Day 2: Explored the Mao Zedong Memorial Hall, Tiananmen Square, and the Tiananmen Rostrum, followed by a visit to the Forbidden City and a sumptuous meal at the Siji Minfu restaurant within the palace.
- Day 3: Ascended the Badaling section of the Great Wall, enjoyed a traditional Beijing meal at Xiaodiao Litang restaurant, and admired the evening views of the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube at the Olympic Park.
- Day 4: Visited the Military Museum and the Summer Palace.
- Day 5: Explored the Prince Gong’s Mansion, wandered through the hutongs, and flew back to Guangzhou.
Traveling in Beijing can be quite exhausting, given the vast size of the city and its numerous attractions. On average, we walked over 25,000 steps per day! It’s crucial to plan your route and research attractions thoroughly to avoid wasting time and energy. This trip marked my first time taking my parents to Beijing, and the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction was unparalleled. It’s my goal to continue earning and showing them the wonders of the world.
