Recently, Tianjin has garnered significant attention, drawing hordes of tourists during holidays. If you’re planning a visit to Tianjin and want to avoid the crowds, this guide is for you! 🩵
Wudadao: This area boasts charming cafes and unique shops worth exploring. However, Mingyuan (especially the large playground area) can be extremely crowded. Instead, opt for a stroll through the narrower lanes for a more authentic experience! (Mingyuan also houses several delicious restaurants, particularly the Youmacai and Shanghai Niandai.)
Moreover, Wudadao is home to the former residences of many historical figures, making it a fascinating destination for those interested in history.
Haihe River: A walk along the Haihe River at night is highly recommended. With singing and drinking, the atmosphere is lively and vibrant. The night views offer a different perspective from the daytime, each with its unique charm. Personally, I prefer the night scenery. It’s worth noting that the Tianjin Ferris Wheel and Haihe River cruise are not necessarily must-dos. Simply admiring the Tianjin Big Clock and soaking in the city’s ambiance is sufficient.
Binjiang Road: Essentially a commercial street, it may not offer much for browsing, making Wudadao a better choice for exploring small shops. However, Binjiang Road boasts numerous affordable shops (especially on Harbin Road), making it a great spot for food hunting! (Just be prepared for long queues, especially during the May Day holiday.) The Ceramic House is also nearby, but it can be extremely crowded during holidays, so be prepared for the crowds.
Binhai New Area: A visit to Dongjiang Qinhai Park is worthwhile for its breathtaking sunrises. Just remember to get up early and don’t expect a typical beach experience as the area is surrounded by rocks. The internet-famous library may not be as interesting as it seems, with most of the books being fakes, but the architecture is indeed impressive.
Jixian County: If you have extra time and want to avoid the crowds in the city, a trip to Jixian County is a great option. While it’s still busy compared to usual, it offers a more relaxed atmosphere, allowing you to enjoy staying in cozy inns and hiking.
Dining: For authentic Tianjin cuisine, I recommend Jin Ge (known for its generous portions), Tong Fa Hao (authentic), and Yuquan Restaurant (not as popular online but still delicious). As for breakfast, avoid the crowds at Xibei Jiao and instead ask locals about nearby breakfast stalls. They offer delicious options that are worth trying! Some recommended dining areas include Wandezhuang and Zhongshan Road, where you’ll find plenty of delicious food options with fewer crowds.
Accommodation: If you’re on a budget and find hotels too expensive during the May Day holiday, I recommend staying at a hot spring resort. Among them, Taiyanggu is a cost-effective choice, offering affordable rates. Other options like No. 9 and Shuiyu are also decent but slightly pricier. If you prefer hotels, staying near a subway station will make it easier to get around the city. You don’t necessarily need to stay near Wudadao or Binjiang Road, which can be pricey.
