Hiking the Picturesque Baishishan in Baoding

Every time I visit a new place, it seems to have become a habit to scout for nearby hiking trails. Recently, while visiting my friends in Baoding, I naturally searched for nearby mountains to explore. And that’s how I discovered the magnificent Baishishan in Baoding.

If you’re in Baoding, a visit to Baishishan is a must! I promise, you won’t be disappointed. Named for its abundance of white marble, Baishishan, located in the northernmost tip of the Taihang Mountains in Laiyuan County, a short distance from Baoding City, is renowned as the “Head of the Taihang” and even bears the moniker of “Little Huangshan”. (For those who appreciate Huangshan as much as I do, this made the hike even more enticing.)

Although the weather was cloudy on my visit, the misty mountains added to its charm, making the scenery even more breathtaking. As I ascended, the continuous chain of mountains and swirling clouds created a truly ethereal landscape. The oddly shaped peaks reminded me of Huangshan, with their majestic and awe-inspiring presence. I found myself constantly pausing to admire and marvel at the views.

I opted for a one-day tour package (128 yuan per person, excluding the round-trip cable car and bus). Since there’s no public transportation directly to Baishishan from Baoding City, the journey took approximately two and a half hours by bus. The itinerary was well-paced, with plenty of time to enjoy the hike and take in the scenery.

The hike itself was relatively easygoing, not requiring a hiking pole. While the initial stretch of long stairs might be slightly taxing, it’s certainly more manageable than Huangshan. I reached the summit in about 40 minutes, where a stone monument marked the “Head of the Taihang” stands. Taking my time, I spent over three hours hiking and lingered at the top for a while, easily completing the hike in half a day.

Restaurants and snack bars are available on the mountain, so there’s no need to worry about supplies. You can even enjoy a meal and pick up some snacks and water for the journey. Checking the latest information, tickets are priced at 130 yuan per person, while a combined ticket including the round-trip cable car costs 270 yuan. Interestingly, there’s even a night hiking ticket available for 99 yuan per person.

Hiking Baishishan was a truly captivating experience, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural significance. It’s a perfect destination for those seeking a leisurely hike with breathtaking views.
