It’s astounding to envision a temple, not particularly vast, yet harboring cultural relics that span five dynasties and remain relatively intact. The pagoda from the Northern Wei Dynasty, the halls of the Tang and Jin Dynasties… Unlike other monasteries in Wutai Mountain, Foguang Temple lies relatively remote from the core scenic area. Perhaps it is this secluded location that has preserved the millennia-old artifacts. Without the perseverance of Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin, they would likely have remained hidden in the annals of history for much longer.
The renowned East Hall of Foguang Temple stands as the largest extant wooden structure of the Tang Dynasty in China. Ascending the steep steps to its entrance, one is immediately awed by the grandeur and elegance of Tang architecture. Located in Foguang Village, Doucun Town, Wutai County, the temple, despite its secluded position, enjoys excellent road conditions, allowing for convenient access by car.
