A Journey Through the Grasslands: From Dalian to Tongliao

Day 1: Dalian – Tongliao

Our journey began in Dalian, heading towards Tongliao. Upon arrival, we were treated to a delicious meal at the Hahuihai Mongolian Restaurant, highly recommended by locals for its exceptional flavors. Among the dishes we savored were hand-pulled lamb, dried beef, scrambled eggs with wild onion, lamb pancakes, and, of course, the authentic Mongolian milk tea. It’s worth noting that the lamb pancakes, a specialty here, are sold in sets of five, but the generous portion size and rich flavor made them well worth the purchase.

Day 2: Tongliao – Huolinguole

The second day took us from Tongliao to Huolinguole, a scenic drive northward, allowing us to appreciate the beauty of the countryside. Our route passed through the Zarud Banner Mountainous Grassland, where we had the opportunity to experience horseback riding. Arriving in Huolinguole, we were directed to the Mongolian Aili Milk Tea House, a popular local haunt renowned for its authentic flavors. The city itself offered reasonable prices and a relaxed atmosphere.

Day 3: Huolinguole – Bayinhusuo Town

Our third day began with a visit to Khan Mountain Scenic Area, a mere 15-minute drive from Huolinguole. The iconic statue of Khan greeted us at the entrance. Next, we ventured to Wild Wolf Valley, where we had the remarkable experience of petting wolf cubs and even partaking in off-road adventures on grassland buggies. As we approached the Ulagai Lake, a breathtaking downhill stretch awaited us, perfect for capturing memorable videos and photos. The serene waterside locale of Shui Zai Yi Fang provided an idyllic backdrop for photography, evoking the poetic lines, “The reeds are green and white with dew, The beloved one is on the waterside.” Our final stop was at the Jiuqu Bay, where the panoramic views from the summit revealed the curving river, a vista that was truly breathtaking. For an even more immersive experience, we highly recommend a helicopter ride over the Ulagai Grassland.

Day 4: Bayinhusuo Town – Tongliao

On the fourth day, we journeyed back to Tongliao, stopping at the scenic布林泉. Remember to bring a water bottle to fill with the refreshing, cooling spring water. The scenic landscapes of the布林泉are captivating and worthy of exploration. Additionally, we visited the Wolf Totem Film Base, offering a unique experience that evoked the spirit of intellectual youths sent to the countryside.
