Ladies, aside from Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street, there are numerous quaint townships and ancient alleys in the water-rich regions of Jiangnan that deserve our exploration. Among them, four lakes hold a special place in my heart, offering not only scenic vistas but also ample opportunities for wandering along their shores, beyond the confines of tourist attractions.
Day 1: Jinji Lake Scenic Area – Free Entry
The shores of Jinji Lake present a captivating panorama, with the Oriental Gateway on one end and the Suzhou International Financial Center on the other, affording a sweeping view of Suzhou’s modern urban landscape. In addition to wandering through the scenic area, visitors can enjoy various attractions such as the Musical Fountain, Suzhou Cultural and Art Center, Moonlight Pier, Eslite Bookstore, Yuanyong Tianmu, the Suzhou International Financial Center, Wanghu Point, and Li Gongdi. It’s worth noting that the popular Ferris wheel overlooking Jinji Lake has been dismantled, and repairs are currently underway in the Taohuadao area. For a convenient dining experience, one can head straight to the left bank of the lake, where Suzhou Center and the legendary “Trousers Building” (Dongfangzhimen) are located. Here, you’ll find a plethora of national chain brands, eliminating the need to search for authentic Suzhou cuisine, which can often be a hit-or-miss experience.
Day 2: Dushu Lake Scenic Area
The Dushu Lake Scenic Area boasts scenic spots such as Bailuyuan Park and a chapel, offering a serene ambiance, particularly during spring when the Cherry Blossom Avenue comes into full bloom. This locale is ideally suited for a taxi ride.
Shi Lake Scenic Area
The Shi Lake Scenic Area, situated in Wuzhong, is a hidden gem that deserves more recognition for its beauty. The vast expanse of the lake encompasses the newly developed Xinguo and Laoguo areas, ideal for those seeking a leisurely stroll and immersion in the charm of the Wu and Yue cultures. It is advisable to bring along some snacks and drinks for the journey. As for dining recommendations, Su-style cuisine and Wuyue Rongji restaurant offer delicious options, particularly their signature large sesame balls.
Shangfangshan National Forest Park and Zoo
For those with a penchant for exploration, the Shangfangshan National Forest Park, adjacent to the Shi Lake Scenic Area, offers an extensive trail system. Additionally, the Shangfangshan Zoo is a noteworthy attraction, having been transformed into a scenic area of impressive size. After a visit to these locations, one often finds themselves heading to Huijin Plaza for a meal, as the nearby university town offers a diverse array of culinary options.
Taihu Lake Scenic Area
The Taihu Lake Scenic Area, with its distinctive beauty, is a highlight of any visit to Suzhou. The Taihu Lake Hubin Park, located in Xukou, provides a scenic backdrop for leisurely walks. From here, visitors can venture to nearby rural inns for a taste of local cuisine or indulge in the famous藏书羊肉 of Shucang. For a more adventurous outing, one can ascend Qionglong Mountain. Given the popularity of these attractions, it is advisable to opt for a taxi or self-drive, as parking can be challenging in these busy areas.
