If I had to choose my favorite ancient town within a one-hour drive from Hangzhou, it would undoubtedly be Dipu and Shen’ao, which are adjacent to each other! I’m glad you all enjoyed my previous post about Dipu Village. The neighboring Shen’ao Ancient Town is equally beautiful and highly recommended.

“If you feel dissatisfied with your current life, come here for a change of scenery.” 📍Hangzhou, Tonglu, Shen’ao Ancient Town. This is the travel destination with the most contrasting impressions I’ve ever visited! Shen’ao Ancient Town captured in my lens exudes a Chinese horror aesthetic, with white walls, black tiles, quirky wood carvings, and narrow alleyways. However, the atmosphere I perceived was warm, relaxed, and free-spirited.
Inside the Qing dynasty residences, elderly residents listen to the radio and hum along to the tunes. Next to the Ming dynasty lotus pond, energetic gentlemen engage in lively chess matches, drawing cheers from the crowd. The commercial street from the Republic of China era has transformed into a hub for artisan shops and residences. At the entrance of the ancient ancestral hall, a makeshift market gathers fruit vendors and spice carts. Beneath a majestic archway, an old-fashioned popcorn cart spits out rough rice rolls. For just 15 yuan, you can take away a large bag and relive the joy of childhood in your hands.
As the largest village in Tonglu, Shen’ao has been inhabited by generations of villagers without any vacancies. Compared to other ancient towns I’ve visited, Shen’ao possesses a vibrant vitality. It hasn’t withered away in solitude but has bloomed from the soil. The beliefs carved by ancient craftsmen with their lifetimes have not been eroded by time. The underground canals built 800 years ago still flow slowly, testament to the wisdom and perseverance of the ancients. Their strength has merged into the ordinary lives of the town’s residents, becoming the soothing ember of human life, passionate and joyful.
