Wujishan Mountain, our own version of Wugongshan in Anhui, is conveniently located just 2.5 hours’ drive from Fuyang. As you descend from the highway towards its foot, safety should be your utmost priority, as the road is fraught with numerous bends. Currently, entry to Wujishan Mountain is free, and its hiking trails are well-developed. The summit, at a manageable altitude, can be reached in approximately 50 minutes, but night hikes still require vigilance, and a flashlight is advisable. The presence of Foziling Reservoir at its base ensures a high frequency of sunrise and sea of clouds vistas.
Travel Advice (Self-drive): Navigate to Zhujiawan, Huoshan County, Lu’an City. Follow the GPS until you reach a left turn at a small bridge, leading to a quaint village. Parking is available in each courtyard for a fee of 10 yuan per vehicle.
Sunrise and Sea of Clouds: It is recommended to start hiking two hours before sunrise to allow sufficient time for the ascent and to secure a prime photography spot. The popularity of this destination is growing, so cherish this hidden gem while it lasts!
Hiking Trails: Upon reaching the village, follow the cement road to find the signpost indicating the mountain trail. The journey is accompanied by bamboo forests and camellia flowers, with a starry sky overhead. Wujishan offers two observation decks for sunrise and sea of clouds views. The first deck is reachable in about 30 minutes. If you encounter a sea of clouds on your visit, it is advisable to enjoy the view from the first deck, as the vista is particularly breathtaking. From there, a right turn leads to the trail for the highest observation deck, another 20-minute climb to the summit.
Dress Code: Layer up! A windbreaker is recommended due to the significant temperature difference between day and night, coupled with strong winds at the summit. Remember to adjust your clothing to prevent chills while hiking, as you may sweat during the ascent.
The sea of clouds at Wujishan is a monthly occurrence. The abundant moisture from Foziling Reservoir, coupled with favorable weather conditions, greatly enhances the chances of encountering this natural wonder. Although luck plays a part, the experience is truly unforgettable. On my first visit, I arrived at the foot of the mountain amidst dense fog, expecting little. Yet, persevering to the observation deck halfway up the mountain rewarded me with a breathtaking sea of clouds that defied description. Photographs could not capture its magnificence, and the moment was truly once-in-a-lifetime. For an even more captivating experience, capturing the scene with a drone is highly recommended.
