A Guide to Wuyi Mountain: Highlights, Food, Transport & Lodging

Recommendations & Caveats for Your Visit:

Top Activities:

  • Bamboo Rafting: This is a must-do activity, capturing approximately 70% of Wuyi Mountain’s scenic beauty. Early morning rafting is ideal, offering beautiful vistas without the heat. The entire journey lasts nearly 80 minutes. Additional fees of 20 yuan per person are required for the boatman’s commentary, which requires unanimous consent from all eight passengers. Some reviews mention that the boatman’s humor may contain mild adult humor, but it is generally well-received.
  • Bamboo Rafting + Impression Dahongpao Show: If you’re interested in experiencing a live outdoor performance, this combination is recommended. Locals can enjoy discounted tickets priced at 188 yuan. Although the show may resemble an extended advertisement for Dahongpao tea, the participation of numerous performers justifies the cost.
  • Bamboo Rafting + Impression Dahongpao Show + Tianyou Peak: Tianyou Peak is one of the most popular hiking destinations. From halfway up, you can overlook the fifth section of the Jiuqu River, offering stunning views. The descent takes approximately half an hour if uninterrupted.

I personally enjoyed these activities, along with a visit to Wuyi Palace and Zhizhi Temple at the bamboo rafting terminus.

Food Recommendations:

  • Youyi Xiaochao Restaurant: Located on Sangu Street, this restaurant offers delicious and affordable dishes. The Red Braised Eggplant is particularly noteworthy.
  • Da Sanwan Restaurant: Also situated on Sangu Street, this restaurant is slightly pricier but offers excellent value for money. The Sweet Osmanthus and Lotus Seed Soup is a must-try.

Transportation:

The tram from Nanping Station to the South Entrance of Wuyi Mountain Scenic Area takes approximately 35 minutes and costs 10 yuan. However, its speed is not particularly impressive. For other modes of transportation, taxis are commonly used, with a starting fare of 6.93 yuan.

Lodging:

Dafangju Guesthouse, located in a villa area, is within walking distance of the Dahongpao performance venue and Sangu Street. The environment is decent, and the service is exceptional. However, the prices are slightly on the higher side. The on-site restaurant is not highly recommended, and it’s advisable to explore dining options outside.
